Fall weather has set in and water temperatures are dropping into the 50's across the county. Hamilton Lake was restocked earlier this month and fishing continues to be good here. Many trout are holding in the channel by the dock and upstream into the creek. Anglers are also finding them closer to the dam too. Small flies have been working, as well as mealworms, waxworms, and various spinners. Bass and pickerel are also being caught still too. Live minnows, jerkbaits, and chatterbaits have been popular for both.
Quite a few people have been fishing Pine these past few days with fairly good success in the Keystone Select area. Many noted that falling leaves are making fishing tougher and causing snags more frequently. It's part of fall fishing that we just have to deal with, but well worth the trouble when the fish are biting!
Anglers are fishing Hammond and Tioga for bass, crappies, and perch with good success. Bass are scattered still, but the bass bites have been in and around any weeds, or offshore holding on deeper structure. Crankbaits continue to produce fish. Crappies and perch are being caught mostly on live minnows. Look for weed edges, offshore points, and offshore structure for the best success. Temps have dropped into the mid 50's.
Cowanesque has been fishing tougher, but bass are being caught in the shallows still, around timber. Offshore, smallies are starting to group up better on structure and areas of hard bottom. A few muskies are being cauhgt on both live suckers and various lures. Bucktails and various spinners continue to be most popular, though some are catching fish on jerkbaits and gliders too.
Up north, anglers are catching salmon on most of the Lake Ontario tributaries. Oak Orchard has been a popular destination and anglers are catching a mix of kings, browns, and steelhead. Egg sacks have been most popular. The creeks were low earlier in the week, but plenty of fish are being caught.
Heavy frosts are starting to show up in the county. It's not too early to start thinking about winter fishing! Stop in and check out all the fall products and a great selection of ice gear!
