Conditions across the county are improving and people are fishing on a few of the lakes and ponds. It is very important to understand that ice thickness and overall conditions are still extremely variable on all the lakes in the region. This freeze/thaw pattern coupled with heavy snow/slush has not allowed the lakes to freeze evenly. For your safety, ALWAYS check conditions yourself. These reports are for your reference only. A spud bar is an absolute necessity. Buy one, make one, borrow one from a friend...just make sure you have one!
Hamilton Lake is in the best shape right now with quite a few people fishing today. Anglers accessed the ice both towards the dam and off the boat launch area. The first few feet off of the boat launch has some slush on top, but past that is decent ice ranging in thickness from about 4-6.75". Some nice perch, trout, and a variety of other fish are being caught this week.. The Mansfield University ice fishing tournament is scheduled for February 15th.
Beechwood Lake- A few guys were fishing here this morning, accessing the lake off the boat launch and off of the dam. Edges are solid and getting on the ice was no problem. Thickness varies quite a bit and it is a mix of bubbled black ice and a layer of hard white ice. Some areas are mostly frozen slush. Ice thickness varied between 3 and 3.5" at the launch and on opposite end of the lake. The CV Anglers tournament is scheduled here for February 8th
Hills Creek Lake- The lake is completely frozen, but here it is mostly white ice and a thin layer of black ice underneath. Some areas are mostly frozen slush that broke with 1 whack of the spud bar, particularly off the stumps end. Ice off the Pines launch was in a little better shape, but still consists of mostly white ice. No one was fishing here today. Thickness varied between 3" and 4". Some areas particularly in the backs of the coves and near areas of incoming water will certainly be thinner too.
Nessmuk Lake- The lake is completely frozen other than a few small patches under the dock. Edges are solid, and conditions were similar here. We measured 3.25-4" of mediocre ice. Again, some areas are mostly frozen slush and broke with 1 whack of the spud bar. We did not check near the dam. No one was fishing here today.
Conditions should improve slightly these next few days with good cold nights and highs at or below freezing. Don't expect to make a lot of ice, but this will help tighten up some of the soft ice and build a little better ice below.
Always check conditions yourself before venturing out. Good luck and be safe out there. Tackle Shack is open 7 days a week for all of your ice fishing tackle and live bait needs
